Dr Leigh Bregman is an honorary research associate in the Department of Philosophy at the University of the Witwatersrand, Johannesburg. His PhD, from UCL, was on the history of scientific societies in the Cape colony in the 1820s and 1830s and his research remains focused on the early nineteenth century Cape. He is presently investigating three related topics: first, the activities of the naturalist and explorer Dr Andrew Smith; second, the place of science in the emergence of civil society in Cape Town; and third, the natural history specimen trade at the Cape.
